Telangana govt to use social media to reach out to masses

Making best use of social media platforms – Facebook and Twitter, the Telangana government is all set to reach out people by spreading information on government schemes and also use these platforms to resolve grievances. Officials of Information and Public Relations department have been asked to create social media accounts in this regard and interact with people.

The initiative was taken after Principal Secretary for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Arvind Kumar was placed in full additional charge of the Information and Public Relations department. He had already issued instructions to the I&PR officials to open accounts on Facebook and Twitter to publicise on government programmes. “Majority of the accounts have been already opened especially district-wise accounts on both Twitter and Facebook. We are identifying young staffers to train them in handling these accounts. Our objective is to act as a bridge between the officials and the people,” said a senior official in the I&PR department.

Besides publicising on old and new initiatives of the State government, the I&PR department will also take note of grievances from people that are tagged to them and then pass on the information to the departments concerned for redressal.

Social media accounts were opened for all district Collectors for interacting with people as part of e-governance and have proved successful in resolving issues brought to their notice by netizens. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao is popular for effectively using his Twitter handle to interact with people and has recently crossed one million followers mark.

All the major government departments and civic bodies including the Telangana Chief Minister’s Office are already using their social media accounts for effective communication of government programmes and get immediate response from people.
